Catchin Up with Simon Chamberlain

Simon Chamberlain on filming with Mack Dawg, the latest with Nomis and watching skate videos.
FSM: Simon how are you?
SC: Good how ’bout yourself?
FSM: I’m doing well. Tell us what you’re up to now that it’s June and the snowboarding season is essentially over.
SC: I just came down here (to So Cal) to go over my footage with Mack Dawg. I filmed with the People guys this year. So that went really well and I’m doing a Daily Habit with Fuel TV tomorrow. So yeah, just hanging out.
FSM: We saw the teaser for the new People movie. Looks sick. How did it go this year filming with them?
SC: It was super fun. It was a different scene because it was a different crew and stuff. Not used to filming with different people, but it went really well. It was an all-around fun year; I went to Japan with ThirtyTwo and that was super good. It was cool… a good time.

FSM: So with ThirtyTwo and Stepchild–those are both sponsors that JP rides for; did you get much chance to ride with him?
SC: At GvR we rode a bunch together, and at a couple Stepchild things. I think he’s coming up to Camp of Champions for the Stepchild week, so that will be fun.
FSM: How ’bout Camp of Champs… you gonna be up in Whistler this summer?
SC: Yeah, I’ll be up there for three weeks coaching. It’s always a good time.
FSM: Are you going to have a signature session or just hanging?
SC: Well, they usually have a Nomis-Stepchild week; they just do team weeks, so that will be the important one.

FSM: When is that?
SC: That’s the third session. But I’m usually there all summer just hanging out and shredding.
FSM: How are things going with Nomis?
SC: Good, really good. This is our first year launching outerwear. That’s obviously a big one. It’s going good. It’s crazy. I’m stoked on all the designs and everything; it’s just exciting….
FSM: What about your schedule later in the summer; will you be doing any southern hemi trips?
SC: I might be going to Argentina, but I’m not sure yet. I usually just design a bunch of stuff with Nomis in the fall and just get my bearings ready for the next year.
FSM: Aside from Japan, what were some of the other highlights from the season?
SC: Well, obviously filming with the People guys, the new crew, and then starting to ride for ThirtyTwo and launching Nomis Outerwear…those were all big things.

FSM: Any specific snowboarding moments that we might see in the film? Sneak peeks you can give us?
SC: I traveled a bunch with Joe Sexton this year ad we always have a good time together. Whenever I went out filming with him it was awesome. And just riding with JP at Bear was super fun. It was a highlight because he was one of my heroes as a kid.
FSM: Speaking of Bear… didn’t you have a signature jib at Bear?
SC: Yeah, for sure, early season they unveiled my signature jib. I got to design my concept of an obstacle and they fully did a sweet one and we had a cool opening and a Nomis demo.
FSM: Yeah, I remember seeing you there. Will that be happening again next season?
SC: No, they’re not doing more signature jibs; I think it’s kinda pricey (laughing)!
FSM: Will you be affiliated with Bear?
SC: Oh yeah for sure, I always am. I think we’re probably going to do another demo and we’ll be there all the time. Also Nomis is actually sponsoring Bear, which is pretty sweet.
FSM: So all the Bear park crew will be rocking Nomis gear this year?
SC: Yeah, all the new outerwear; they’ll be riding it.
FSM: Will it be specific to Bear? I remember ThirtyTwo did that Lash boot this year that was specific to Brighton’s park crew.
SC: Yeah, yeah… they pick their own colorways and then we make it all custom for them. We actually just finished it and it looks pretty dope.
FSM: What were some shredding moments/new experiences?
SC: I rode some backcountry that was super fun. I had a week that was this amazing window. In Whistler it’s so inconsistent. Maybe you’ll get one day out of two weeks, but this was like five days of filming in a row, which was amazing.

FSM: Speaking of films, obviously People is one of the most anticipated of the year, what else are you looking forward to seeing?
SC: Double Decade for sure. Wanna see JP and Jeremy and those guys. Decade was my favorite video as a kid, so that’ll be a good one. And then probably just the skate videos (laughing). Like the new FLIP video.

FSM: So lots of skating for the summer lined up?
SC: Yeah, already been skating a bit. Probably do some more. Always into the skateboarding scene.
FSM: Alright well thanks for coming by Simon. Hope you score some surf before you split out of town.
SC: Already got some the last two days. Active hooked me up with a board.
FSM: Perfect. Those falls are a little softer than on the concrete.
SC: Yeah, exactly!
